Sattvic Diet and Its Importance in Yoga

Diet plan is a necessary subjects in yoga. In order to be a yogi you must follow sattvic diet. A yoga practitioner must follow discipline in diet along with yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation. In yogic system there are three categories of diet. One must know about these diet system before starting the journey of yoga.

  • Sattvic Diet :
    Sattvic means purity it leads to pure health, harmony and well-being.
  • Rajasic Diet:
    Rajasic diets leads to stress, anger, activity and restlessness
  • Tamasic Diet:
    Tamasic diet leads to dullness, laziness and lethargy.

Bhagavad Gita says, “Every human being is born with innate faith, which can be of three kinds. They are sāttvic (mode of goodness), rājasic(mode of passion), or tāmasic(mode of ignorance).”

Sattvic Diet

Sattvic diet are pure, fresh, light, succulent, nourishing diet that helps to keep your mind and body calm. Sattvic diet are those diet that won’t have any bad or negative effect to your body. Sattvic diet are taken for good health rather than for taste. Clean water and fresh air together with sattvic food plays a good role for you well being. Cook himself should be of sattva mind ( balanced and pure mind) to prepare sattvic food. If his character and mind set are not sattva mind, no matter what food he is preparing it won’t be sattvic any more. Food bought from money earned from robbery, stealing, illegal or wrong intention can’t be sattvic food. You must earn your food in sattva manner ( right manner with good intention).

List of Sattvic Diet

  • Grains: rice, wheat, buck wheat, maize, lentil, peas, gram, soya been etc.
  • Vegetables: mustard green, garden cress, spinach, cauli flower, cabbage, colocasia, nettles and other leafy vegetables, pumpkin, serpent gourd, bitter gourd, tomato, squash, cucumber, potato, radish, carrot, cocoyam,  common yam, sweet potato etc
  • Dairy product: Milk, Yoghurt, buttermilk, ghee etc.
  • Nuts and seeds: walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seeds etc.
  • Fruits: apples, bananas, papaya, mangos, melon, lemon, gooseberry and all other seasonal fruits.
  • Others: chapatis, halva, khichri, honey, sugarcane, jaggery, basil, neem etc.

Importance of Sattvic Diet

  • Sattvic foods provides all the nutrient carbohydrates, protein, minerals, vitamin and fat needed for the human body.
  • Three main reason of eating  body building, protecting and nourishing are fulfilled from sattvic food.
  • It makes you physically strong and mentally calm.
  • It helps in keeping diseases away from you.
  • It helps in weight loss.
  • It improves your strength, semen quality, ojjas and tejas, gives you long life.
  • Sattvic food works as anti aging agent in your body and gives you glowing skin and young looking appearance.
  • Following sattvic diet plan and lifestyle helps you bring control over your senses and monkey mind.
  • It helps in keeping balance between your body, mind and soul and encourage you towards spiritual growth.
